OnychMed: The Innovative Solution for Treating Fungal Nail Infections

The Mail on Sunday November 9th 2025, reported a new cure for fungal nails  (onychomycosis) called OnychMed. A promising new treatment, which can potentially eradicate fungal nail disease within >24 hours. An amazing result.

So, what is OnychMed Fungal Nail Treatment?

It is a new treatment which is being developed at Guy’s and St Thomas’, London. It consists of securing an artificial nail plate over the infected nail. This false nail is impregnated with a special gel. This gel contains water and sodium hydrogen sulphide(NaHS). Once applied to nail the NAHS diffuses through the nail and releases the hydrogen sulphide gas. This gas can effectively kill the dermatophytes without passing into the blood stream.

It all sounds great, lets use it now! Unfortunately, it is still in the clinical trial stage. The phase II human trial commences next year. It will involve 60 patients who will be monitored for 18 months, then if successful rolled onto 150 patients. Hopefully available within 5 years, but on prescription.

Questions:

  1. Will the sodium hydrogen sulphide be able to neutralise the dormant fungal spores entrenched within a fungal nail plate?
  2. Are the trial patients being empowered with home-care advice in breaking the cycles of infection?
  3. How many nails can be treated at once?
  4. Who will be allowed to apply the nail?
  5. Will it only be available in the NHS?

These are all pertinent questions. My considerations:

  1. Fungal biofilms are challenging to treat. Even if up to 90% of the biofilm is treated, the remaining 10% could re-infect.
  2. If patients do not break all cycles of infection e.g. Athletes Foot Infections, dormant spores on socks and in footwear, the treatment will fail.
  3. If a patient presents with more than >5 infected nails, these all must be treated as again treatment efficacy could be reduced.
  4. Podiatrists should be the medical specialists who apply this nail plate, as we have the skill set and knowledge on how to treat diseased nails.
  5. If OnychMed is limited only to the NHS, many patients could potentially miss out e.g. long waiting lists. Time is the essence when effectively treating onychomycosis.

I am all for new fungal nail treatment solutions. In the past very little attention or money has been ring fenced to develop safe new treatments. There is still a long way to go, but OnychMed sounds very promising. I certainly will be keeping an eye on this innovative product.
