Shockwave therapy is In our experience at Compleet Feet one of the most effective treatments for resolving and reducing chronic achilles tendonopathies, heel pain and plantar fasciitis . More technically known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy or ESWT for short. It has been endorsed and recommended by NICE, the UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, as been clinically efficacious for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions especially with regard to the foot.
ESWT basically delivers multiple soundwaves to an injured area to stimulate inflammation and initiate the required healing response to promote a reduction in pain and ultimate recovery. Usually only 3 sessions are required with astounding results, which are appreciated and observed weeks after the treatments as the healing cascade completes its job.
We combine our shockwave treatments with tapping, orthotics, good footwear and mobilisation therapy if required. In our experience once we can help to reduce some of the heel pain the patient begins to relax their foot and start weight-bearing correctly. It is often the abnormal compensatory response of a patient which makes the problem worse. To avoid weightbearing over the painful area they shift their weight to the outside border and this exacerbates the stresses through the plantar fascia. After awhile individuals forget how to weight bear normally so the problem just gets worse.
